iPhone 13 Production to Start in India in April at Troubled Plant That Had Been Closed Over Worker Protests

Apple is expected to start iPhone 13 production in India in April, at a Foxconn facility that was shut down over protests over food poisoning and poor living conditions.

Apple began trial production of the iPhone 13 in India at the Sriperumbudur factory near Chennai in December, with a shift to full production scheduled for shortly after. Now, it appears that shift will take place in April.

The move to full production was delayed after workers protested unsanitary living conditions, which included worms in their food. Foxconn was forced to close the plant and the plant was also placed on probation by Apple until conditions at the plant improved.

According to sources used by Business Standard, Apple is expected to use the Sriperumbudur facility to manufacture the iPhone 13 in April. The iPhones produced at the plant will be both for domestic sales and for export to other territories.

The factory has previously manufactured the iPhone 11 since July 2020, along with the iPhone 12, the iPhone XR, and the original iPhone SE.

“We have been working on a series of improvements to fix issues we found at the offsite dormitory facilities at Sriperumbudur and to enhance the services we provide to our employees,” said Foxconn India in a January statement. “We have implemented a range of corrective actions to ensure this cannot happen again and a rigorous monitoring system to ensure workers can raise any concerns they may have, including anonymously.”
