Display Analyst Young Say He’d Be ‘Surprised’ to See an iPad Mini 7 With 120Hz ProMotion

A somewhat iffy rumor that suggests that Apple will release an iPad mini boasting a 120Hz ProMotion display has been revived in the Asian media. However, a well-connected display industry analyst says he’d be “surprised” to see the release of such a beast.

Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC) analyst Ross Young, responded to a question about the rumor on Twitter, saying he would be “surprised” if it was accurate, given that the LCD panel that Apple uses for the ‌iPad mini‌ isn’t compatible with ProMotion.

Apple currently uses a-Si LCD backplane technology for ‌iPad mini‌ 6 screens. A-si, or amorphous silicon, is a popular display tech, due to its low cost and relatively simple production process.

Meanwhile, Apple’s iPad Pro models use Oxide LCD panels. Oxide LCD technologies are preferred in the premium smartphone industry for the tech’s ability to provide higher contrasts, refresh rates, and resolutions.

Rumors that Apple may use ProMotion in its next-generation iPad mini began to once again circle the rumor bowl shortly after the “jelly scrolling” issue was raised. “Jelly scrolling” refers to a slanted/wobbly text effect that some users experience when scrolling through text on the ‌iPad mini‌ 6 in portrait mode.

Since LCD screens refresh line by line, a tiny delay takes place between when the lines at the top and the lines at the bottom are refreshed. It should be noted that this is normal behavior for LCD screens. However, it can appear to be more noticeable when using the ‌‌iPad mini‌‌.
