iFixit Apple Watch Ultra Teardown Shows Larger Battery, Improved Water Resistance, More

iFixit has performed the teardown voodoo that they do so well on the new Apple Watch Ultra and the video they’ve produced provides a closer look at the watch’s internal design and components. The watch has a significantly larger battery and speaker.

iFixit said the device remains challenging to repair, despite the Ultra’s four exposed pentalobe screws on the back case for quick access to the inside of the watch. iFixit said a gasket contributing to the Apple Watch Ultra’s water resistance was immediately broken. Accessing parts like the battery and Taptic Engine is difficult, as it requires removing the display, which can be difficult.

The teardown confirms previous reports that the Apple Watch Ultra is powered by a 542 mAh battery, which is 76% larger than the Apple Watch Series 8’s 308 mAh battery. Apple says the ‌Apple Watch Series 8‌ provides all-day battery life. Meanwhile, the ‌Apple Watch Ultra‌ can deliver up to 36 hours of normal use and up to 60 hours with Low Power mode turned on.

The teardown also confirmed the Ultra’s significantly larger speaker, which results in louder phone calls.

Apple Watch Ultra hit shelves last Friday. The high-end $799 watch features a 49mm titanium case and flat sapphire front crystal boasting the biggest Apple Watch display yet. A new customizable Action button offers instant access to a wide range of features.
