Nikkei: iPhone 15 to Use Sony’s Newest “State of the Art” Image Sensors

A new report from Nikkei says Apple’s 2023 iPhone 15 lineup will be equipped with Sony’s newest “state of the art” image sensors.

Sony Semiconductor Solutions developed the new image sensor, which the group company will manufacture at its Nagasaki plant and begin shipping to Apple and other smartphone makers.

Compared to standard sensors, roughly doubles the saturation signal level in each pixel compared with conventional sensors, allowing it to capture more light to cut down on underexposure and overexposure. As an example of what that means, Nikkei says it will enable the iPhone’s camera to clearly photograph a person’s face even if the subject is standing against a strong backlight.

Sony is using semiconductor architecture that puts photodiodes and transistors in separate layers, allowing for more photodiodes.

The report doesn’t specify whether all of the ‌iPhone 15‌ models will use the new sensor technology, or if it will be limited to Apple’s higher-end “Pro” ‌iPhone 15‌ models.
