Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman says Apple has delayed plans to introduce its AR/VR headset to June from April, pushing the debut back by two months. Gurman expects to see it unveiled at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference.
The iPhone maker is now aiming to unveil the product at its annual Worldwide Developers Conference, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the plans are confidential. Apple made the decision to delay the launch earlier this month after product testing showed that both hardware and software issues still needed to be ironed out, they said.
The debut of the headset has been a long time coming, with Apple working on the technology since around 2015. At one point, the company aimed to introduce the product in June of last year, before pushing back the introduction until around January 2023. It was then shifted to spring before the latest postponement.
Apple had originally planned to introduce the headset in mid-2022. The timeline shifted to January 2023 later in 2022, then April 2023, and now June 2023. Gurman cautions that the timing of the launch could change again. However, Apple is targeting the end of 2023 for a debut.
Gurman says Apple is still working to fix problems with the hand and eye control functions. Rumors have indicated that headset users will be able to control the headset with both eye movements and hand gestures.
When it launches, the headset is expected to be priced somewhere around $3,000, which will limit its appeal to high-end consumers and professionals.
