References to a mysterious new “compute module” has been spotted in Apple’s iOS 16.4 beta code, indicating that new hardware may be on the way.

9to5Mac originally spotted the new “ComputeModule” device class was spotted in Apple’s iOS 16.4 developer disk image from the Xcode 16.4 beta. The code suggests indicates that Apple has at least two different compute modules in development, identified as “ComputeModule13,1” and “ComputeModule13,3.”

The discovery of the module has led to speculation on what the mysterious “Compute Modules” may be, but some speculate they could be referencing a new Apple Silicon-powered Mac Pro. Others say it could be a reference to modules for Apple’s upcoming mixed-reality headset.
