Apple Working on ‘Special Version’ of iPadOS 17 for Larger iPads, 14.1-inch Model to Launch in 2024

A new rumor from Twitter account holder @analyst941 claims that Apple is developing a special version of iPadOS 17 designed for use on larger iPads, the first of which will see a 2024 release.

@analyst941 says a special version of Apple’s upcoming iPad software is in the works that will support the more advanced capabilities of a lineup of bigger iPads that are in the works. A 14.1-inch iPad with an M3 Pro chip is said to be set for release next year.

The leaker claims that the 14.1-inch iPad model will be able to use up to two 6K displays at 60Hz via Thunderbolt 4, with iPadOS 17 including support for the capability. @analyst941 says this could be achieved by daisy-chaining displays, but it could also mean that the larger iPad features multiple Thunderbolt ports instead of just one.

The leaker also suggests that Apple’s upcoming larger iPads could sport a new moniker to differentiate them from the current lineup, such as “iPad Ultra” or iPad Studio.” Although this claim appears to be based on speculation rather than any hard evidence.

Apple is believed to have been working on iPads with larger displays since mid-2021, but we’ve seen multiple conflicting rumors about when the first models will arrive and in what size.

This Twitter leaker had provided accurate information about upcoming products in the past, as the source was correct about the iPhone 14 Pro’s Dynamic Island. Still, at this stage of the game you should take this rumor with a grain of your favorite salt-free seasoning, and wait to see what Apple has to show us at WWDC 2023 in June.
