AirTags Help Uncover Turkey Relief Donations Fraud

AirTags have been used to reveal that items donated by Mexicans for earthquake relief in Turkey were instead resold in Mexico City markets. Mexico, journalist Pamela Cerdeira used AirTags to prove the government’s mishandling of earthquake relief donations.

The donations were solicited as a way to help Turkey recover from its recent devastating earthquakes. Cerdeira decided to donate two items with AirTags in them, to see whether they actually ended up.

While Cerdeira sent rice and a pack of toilet rolls, neither item made it to Turkey. In reality, they never left Mexico.

Cerdeira monitored the movement of the items and their accompanying AirTags through the Find My app. She tracked the two items to separate markets across the city.

Although she wasn’t able to get access to where her rice package appears to be, Cerdeira did get to the toilet rolls — and used the Precision Finding feature to confirm it was indeed her donation.

Cerdeira has documented the case in a Spanish-language YouTube video called (translated), “The Business of Tragedy: the groceries that never reached Turkey.”

Government official Oscar Gutierrez Camacho told Cerdeira that the government had nothing to do with the items being diverted and resold. “I have nothing to do with them [the markets], but we [will] gladly investigate,” he said (translated.)
