A factory-sealed original 2007 4GB iPhone has been sold at auction for $190,373, far exceeding the previous record for an auctioned iPhone. The iPhone had been expected to bring a record $100,000, but the final sales price far exceeded the expected amount.
The LCG Auction began on June 30 and ran through July 16. The initial bid was $10,000, and the lot had a total of 28 bids, which led to the record-breaking $190,372.80 sale.
The iPhone was originally sold in two storage options, with either 4GB or 8GB of storage when it launched on June 29, 2007. The 8GB model proved to be much more popular, causing Apple to cease selling the 4GB model after just a few months of sales, replacing it with a higher 16GB storage model.
The 4GB original iPhone was only available for a limited amount of time and didn’t sell well, making it the rarest of the first-generation iPhone models. The 4GB model was sold for $499, while the 8GB version cost $599.
The person auctioning off the iPhone was part of the original iPhone engineering team, says LCG Auctions, and it comes with a letter of provenance.
A first-generation NOS iPhone still sealed in its box went for $54,904 at auction in March. In April, a factory-sealed “Golden Ticket” first-generation 8GB iPhone with a unique sticker sold for $40,320 at auction.
