Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo: iPhone 16 Pro to Boast Tetraprism Telephoto Lens With 5X Optical Zoom

Next year’s iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max will both be equipped with Apple’s Telephoto lens with improved zoom capabilities, according to Apple industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

  1. Looking ahead to 2024, the two fastest-growing brands in global periscope camera smartphone shipments are Apple and Huawei.
  2. Apple is expected to include a tetraprism camera in the iPhone 16 Pro, leading to a 160% YoY growth in iPhones with this camera in 2024.

Apple debuted its new tetraprism lens system alongside the iPhone 15 Pro Max, enabling 5x optical zoom for the first time. The new lens system was limited to the iPhone 15 Pro Max. The tech was not used in the iPhone 15 Pro, likely due to space constraints and possibly a lower-than-expected production yield for the new lens system.

According to Kuo, when lens supplier Largan was producing the tetraprism hardware for the ‌iPhone 15 Pro‌ Max in the third quarter of 2023, the production yield was at just 40%. The yield has now improved to 70% or better.

Apple is rumored to be planning to increase the size of the ‌iPhone 16‌ Pro to 6.3 inches, up from 6.1 inches, which will allow for more space for the tetraprism camera hardware. The size increase and the yield improvement will allow Apple to include the tetraprism lens in the iPhone 16 Pro.

Kuo did not say whether Apple has any plans for improvements to the tetraprism lens in 2024.
