iOS 17.2 Beta 4 Allows Users to Change Notifications and Haptics

The fourth beta of iOS 17.2, which was released today, allows users to change the default alert sound for notifications, and associated haptics.

Apple released iOS 17 back in September and we almost immediately saw complaints from iPhone users that they could not change the default notification (named “Rebound”) which replaced the traditional “tri-tone” alert. Users complained that the notification sound was not loud enough for many users and that there was no option to adjust the volume of the alert.

At the time, iPhone users couldn’t do anything to resolve the issue except to complain to Apple about it. Well, enough users must have complained, as Apple has heard the complaints and offered a fix.

An X post by @iSWUpdates was the first to alert the world to how it is now possible to change the default notification sound and associated haptics.

To make the change (remember this is only in the fourth beta of the iOS 17.2 update), go into the Settings app, tap “Sounds & Haptics,” and look for the section of options to set sounds for various on-phone events. You’ll see a new option there called “Default Alerts.” This is where you can change the default alert the iPhone plays. (You’ll find “Tri-Tone” under “Classic.”

While there is always a chance that this feature won’t appear in the public release of iOS 17.2, the chances are good that it will make an appearance, as this is the fourth beta of iOS 17.2 and it is expected to be released sometime in the coming weeks.
