Analyst Jeff Pu: iPhone 17 Pro Max to Likely Feature 48MP Telephoto Lens

Apple supply chain analyst Jeff Pu claims Apple’s iPhone 17 Pro Max (that’s right I said 17) will likely feature a 48-megapixel telephoto lens.

Pu’s comments come in a research note this week with Hong Kong-based investment firm Haitong International Securities, focused on Apple supplier Largan Precision. Pu said the iPhone 17 Pro Max’s 48-megapixel telephoto lens will be optimized for use with Apple’s upcoming Vision Pro headset. Pu did not explain how it would interface with the Vision Pro.

iPhone 15 Pro handsets have a 48-megapixel main lens, a 12-megapixel ultra-wide lens, and a 12-megapixel telephoto lens. As of iOS 17.2, the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max can record spatial video with 3D depth for playback on the Vision Pro.

Earlier this year, Pu said iPhone 16 Pro models would feature a 48-megapixel ultra wide lens, meaning the iPhone 17 Pro Max could possibly be the first iPhone to have an entirely 48-megapixel rear camera system.

iPhone 17 Pro models are expected to debut sometime in September 2025, so don’t hold your breath until we find out whether or not this comes to pass, because blue isn’t your color.
