Apple to Offer Rare iPhone Discounts in China in Response to Sales Slump

Apple to Offer Rare iPhone Discounts in China in Response to Sales Slump

Apple will launch a rare promotional discount on its iPhones in China, knocking as much as 500 yuan ($70) off the price of its flagship devices ahead of the Lunar New Year in February.

The promotion will run from January 18 through January 21 and applies to everything from the iPhone 13 to the iPhone 15 Pro Max. Smaller discounts are available on other Apple products like Macs, iPads, AirPods, and Apple Watch models.

Apple does not typically offer promotions on its website around the Lunar New Year, usually leaving such promotions to Apple-authorized resellers, so this is an unusual move.

Apple’s discounts come as the company is experiencing falling iPhone sales in China, facing a double-digit plunge in 2023, thanks to the popularity of Chinese smartphone maker Huawei’s Mate 60 series lineup. Huawei’s Mate 60 phones use a new China-made 7-nanometer processor tailored for the local market.

Apple’s sales slump is likely also due to China’s decision last year to ban iPhones from the offices of multiple government agencies and state companies.
