When Can We Expect to See the AirTag 2?

Apple released its first model of its AirTag tracker in April 2021. While the tracking accessory hasn’t had an update since then, there have been rumors about a second-generation model.

Apple supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo and Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman both have said we should expect the next AirTag to be released sometime in 2025.

In October 2023, we saw Apple industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo say mass production of the accessory has been delayed until 2025. Kuo said he believes the new AirTag will have better integration with Apple’s upcoming Vision Pro headset, as part of a spatial computing ecosystem. However, Kuo did not provide any additional details or mention any other potential new features for the item tracking tag.

Gurman echoed this revised timeframe in his Power On newsletter published last Sunday.

“Apple considered launching its second-generation AirTags in 2024, but I’m now told new versions aren’t likely to hit the market until 2025,” he wrote.

Gurman expects the new AirTag to feature an upgraded wireless chip, but he did not elaborate on what this would mean.

So, we continue to wait for a second-generation AirTag, and it looks as if we will continue to wait until at least 2025.
