Netflix Subscribers Can No Longer Pay Through Apple’s App Store

The Netflix streaming service is telling basic plan subscribers in some countries, including Canada and the United States, that they will soon no longer be able to pay for their subscription via Apple’s App Store and will soon need to add a new payment method to retain their accounts.

While Netflix ceased allowing new customers to subscribe to its service on iOS devices as far back as 2018, customers who had already subscribed that way were allowed to continue to use the App Store’s in-app purchase feature to pay. Now it appears Netflix has wearied of paying Apple its 15% cut of the action, so it is dropping that payment option.

As reported by 9to5Mac, the U.S. Netflix support site now says that customers in “some” countries will need to add a new payment method.

“Some Apple-billed members in select countries may be prompted to add a new payment method to continue their subscription.”

The company did not specify which countries would be affected, but the notice was added to the United States site, indicating U.S. users will be affected by the change.
