iPadOS 17.5 Beta Includes References to New Apple Pencil and ‘Squeeze’ Gesture

The first beta of iPadOS 17.5 is reported to include references to a new fourth-generation Apple Pencil, as rumors persist about a new version of an Apple Pencil debuting soon.

The beta includes a hidden code reference to a “V4” version of the Apple Pencil, according to MacRumors:

While there is little information on what an updated Apple Pencil’s features might look like, we have seen rumors of a shorter design sporting a glossy finish, color sampling features, and magnetically interchangeable tips.

Apple is widely expected to launch new iPad Pro models sporting OLED displays later this month, so a revamped Apple Pencil would make sense. We are also expecting to see a revamped Magic Keyboard for the iPad Pro, so we may see both accessories released alongside each other.

Additional code in the iOS 17.5 beta uncovered by MacRumors indicates that the Apple Pencil could gain a “squeeze” gesture for certain actions, but details are slim.
