The iPhone Air Was Never Intended to be Refreshed Every Year

While the iPhone Air is far from Apple’s most popular iPhone model, it was never really intended to be, says Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.

Commenting in the latest edition of his Power On newsletter, Gurman says Apple had never scheduled a second-generation iPhone Air release for 2026, meaning rumors about delays for a second-gen version are simply incorrect. The iPhone Air replaced the iPhone Plus, which was Apple’s worst selling iPhone lineup, and was somewhat of a proof-of-concept to see how such a device would be received.

Gurman agrees with reports that a next-generation iPhone Air is being developed, although he said Apple isn’t focusing on adding a second rear-facing camera to the device, it is instead focusing on an improved chipset. He says Apple intends to use TSMC’s 2 nanometer for the new chip, extending battery life while also improving performance.

Gurman says that although there have been several reports of a second camera lens for the Air, he hasn’t seen any indications of the structural change that would be required to add a second rear-facing lens.
