Verizon Outage Resolved, Carrier Promises Customer Credits

Verizon on Wednesday experienced a major outage in the United States. The cellular carrier announced the outage has been resolved as of last night at 10:20 p.m. Eastern Time.

The carrier promises to credit an unspecified amount to affected customers’ accounts, and it says it will share details about the credit soon.

“Today, we let many of our customers down and for that, we are truly sorry,” said Verizon.

On Wednesday, customers with iPhones and other smartphones on the Verizon network reported being unable to make phone calls, send text messages, or connect to the internet over 5G or LTE due to the outage. iPhone users reported seeing “SOS” in their device’s status bar, indicating the device could not connect to Verizon’s network.

In a support document, Apple says “SOS” means your device isn’t connected to your cellular provider’s network, although you can still make emergency calls through other carrier networks. The feature is available in Australia, Canada, and the United States.

The service disruption led to emergency alerts in New York City and Washington, DC, which warned that Verizon customers were having trouble reaching 911.

While on social media there were rumors that the Verizon outage was due to a cyberattack, a reason for the outage has yet to be officially released.

Verizon also said that customers who are still having an issue should restart their devices to reconnect to the network.
