96.4% of iPhone Users Say They’ll Stick With the iPhone Next Time Around, Android Users 4x More Likely to Switch

Apple customers are quite loyal, and more than ever, iPhone users say they’ll stick with an iPhone the next time they upgrade. According to a smartphone loyalty survey conducted by phone trade-in site SellCell, 96.4% of those customers surveyed said they planned to stick with an iPhone, and a mere 3.6% saying they would move on to a different brand. That’s an increase from 91.9% in the 2021 survey.

Android users had much less brand loyalty, being 4x more likely to switch devices than iPhone users. 86.4% of Android users said they would stick with an Android device, while 13.6% said they planned to look for greener device pastures.

The key findings of the survey are as follows:

  • iPhone loyalty stands at 96.4%, up from 91.9% in 2021
  • Android loyalty stands at 86.4%, with users nearly four times more likely to switch than iPhone users (13.6% vs 3.6%)
  • Samsung loyalty has risen to 90.1%, up from 74% in 2021
  • Google loyalty has rebounded to 86.8%, up from 65.2% in 2021
  • Price and value remain the biggest drivers of switching

Of the 3.6% of iPhone users who said they would move to another platform, 69.7% said they would opt for a Samsung smartphone, while 20.2% said they would choose a Google Pixel smartphone. 26.8% said they would choose an iPhone over an Android smartphone.

While 60.8% of iPhone users said they would stick with an iPhone because they prefer Apple, 17.4% said they were simply too invested in the Apple ecosystem to change. About half of iPhone users who said they would likely switch was because the iPhone is too expensive or because other brands offer better value. 22.5% said other brands have better technology.

The main statistical findings of the survey are as follows:

  • iPhone loyalty stands at 96.4%, up from 91.9% in 2021
  • iPhone switching stands at 3.6%
  • Android loyalty stands at 86.4%, with switching at 13.6%
  • Android users are nearly four times more likely to switch than iPhone users
  • Samsung loyalty stands at 90.1%, up from 74% in 2021
  • Samsung switching stands at 9.9%
  • Google loyalty stands at 86.8%, up from 65.2% in 2021
  • Google switching stands at 13.2%
  • The loyalty gap between iPhone and Android now stands at 10 percentage points
  • Price and value are the biggest drivers of switching
  • Technology is the second biggest driver
  • Overall, loyalty has increased across all major brands since 2021

iPhone users were also more loyal over time, with 83.8% said they had used an iPhone for more than five years. Just 33.8% of Android users said they had stuck with the same brand for over five years.

SellCell’s says its survey was limited to 5,000 U.S. respondents, with a roughly equal representation between iPhone and Android users, with two separate surveys that included the same question structure.

More information about the survey is available from SellCell’s website.
