X on Friday launched XChat, its standalone messaging app for the iPhone and iPad. The new app allows X users to conduct chats with other X users in a prive, separated space.

X has been beta testing the app with a small group of beta users since last year. The network says more features are on the way, and the initial version is “just the beginning of what we’re building for messaging,” according to X lead designer Benji Taylor.

XChat is now available as a free download from the App Store in the United States. While an Android version of the app is on the way, a release date has not yet been announced.
