Apple Donating to Venezuela Earthquake Relief Efforts

Apple CEO Tim Cook today announced that Apple will be donating to relief efforts on the ground in Venezuela, following two catastrophic earthquakes that hit the region earlier this week.

Two powerful earthquakes struck Venezuela on Wednesday, killing at least 188 people and injuring over 1,520 others. The earthquakes had magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5, and struck just a minute apart.

Rescue teams are still searching for survivors among the rubble of several collapsed buildings. Hospitals are overwhelmed and there is a significant need for medical supplies. International aid has begun to arrive on the scene, with various countries providing teams to assist in the recovery efforts.

Unfortunately for Venezuela’s citizens, the infrastructure is particularly vulnerable to seismic activity, as many buildings are constructed from unreinforced brick masonry and adobe, and are not designed to withstand strong earthquakes. This has led to the high casualty figures and extensive damage from the quakes.

Apple has donated to the Red Cross for earthquake and hurricane relief efforts in the past. If you would like to contribute to Red Cross relief efforts, visit the Red Cross donation website.
