iOS 27 Code Contains References to iPhone With Two Batteries

The recently released fourth developer seed of iOS 27 contains code with references to an iPhone with two batteries, according to Macworld. The code strings in question include new Battery Health text trings that mention multiple internal batteries.

The mentions are as follows:

• “The batteries in this iPhone are performing as expected.”
• “The health of the batteries in this iPhone has significantly degraded. An Apple Authorized Service Provider can replace the batteries to restore full performance and capacity.”
• “The health of the batteries in this iPhone has significantly degraded, and one of the batteries could not be verified as a genuine Apple battery. An Apple Authorized Service Provider can replace the batteries to restore full performance and capacity.”

Since all of the wording in the Settings app on current iPhone models references only a single battery, the plural phrasing could be Apple laying the groundwork for its expected foldable iPhone, which is expected to have a battery in each half of the device. Foldable smartphones traditionally use this design, and Apple is expected to follow their lead, using the same design.

Previously, we’ve seen rumors indicating that the foldable iPhone, which some refer to as the “iPhone Ultra,” will use twin battery cells with 1,921mAh and 2,962mAh capacities for a total of 4,883mAh.

The new strings in iOS 27 indicate the batteries in the “Ultra” will be serviceable separately, allowing a single failing battery to be swapped out on its own, lowering repair costs for battery replacements.

Apple’s foldable ‌”iPhone Ultra‌” is expected to be unveiled this September alongside the iPhone 18 Pro lineup.
