MIng-Chi Kuo: All Three 2020 iPhones to Have 5G Wireless Connectivity

Well-respected Apple industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo expects three iPhones to be released in 2020, and he says all three of the devices will boast 5G connectivity.

In a recent research note from the analyst, who works for TF Securities, he cites competition from 5G-able Android phones in forcing Apple’s hand. Kuo believes consumers will demand that all of the 2020 iPhones have the technology.

Kuo isn’t certain Apple will release a 5G handset without mmWave technology for markets like China, which only will support sub-6GHz networks. Kuo says that “”Apple and EMS who are currently focusing on developing and testing mmWave may not have enough development resources if Apple would like to develop the 5G iPhone, which will only support Sub-6GHz.”

Where 5G is concerned, frequencies can be generally categorized in one of two groups: Low-frequency sub-6GHz bands, and higher-frequency 6GHz bands. The 6GHz band is called mmWave in the US. It is the part of the 5G specification that delivers the fast speeds, that is if a handset is within the short range of a mmWave transmitter.

Many analysts expects Apple to release three models in 2020, all boasting OLED screens. The handsets will be in 5.4-, 6.1-, and 6.7-inch sizes. Kuo had earlier said he believed that the 6.1-inch units wouldn’t include 5G support. He has now apparently changed his mind.
