Apple will debut a new version of its Vision Pro headset later this year, which will use the same M4 chip that already powers the iPad Pro and several Mac models, says Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman.
Although both Gurman and Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo have both previously said the new Vision Pro would be powered by an M5 chip, it now appears Apple will go with the M4 chip instead.
Since the current Vision Pro is contains an M2 chip, even an M4 chip will be a significant upgrade. Apple is also reportedly testing a version of the headset with an upgraded Neural Engine with a larger number of cores, to improve processing for AI tasks.
In addition to a faster processor, Apple also plans to replace the headset’s current straps with straps that will make it more comfortable to wear for long periods of time. The straps are intended to relieve head pain and neck strain.
The second-generation Vision Pro will likely be it for the headset until a redesigned model debuts in 2027. Kuo says the redesigned model, which he calls the “Vision Air,” will be significantly lighter.
Gurman says Apple is working on another version of the Vision Pro that will be tethered to an iPhone or Mac for reduced lag in enterprise applications.
