Apple will hide the front-facing camera on its 20th anniversary iPhone under the device’s screen, claims Weibo-based Chinese leaker Digital Chat Station.
The leaker said Apple’s development of its under-screen camera technology was progressing well, and was on-schedule for use in its 2027 “anniversary” model.
“Apple plans to release an under-display front camera on its smartphones in 2027; hopefully, Android devices can launch similar features around the same time, combining 3D under-display face recognition with an under-display camera”
Several Android phones have selfie cameras located under their display, the image quality has suffered due to the lens being buried under display layers. Apple has delayed using a front-facing camera due to those imperfections, although it has been developing such a system for a while now.
Apple is expected to debut under-screen Face ID technology on next-year’s iPhone 18 Pro models, and many observers expect to see an under-display front-facing camera debut as soon as next year’s first-ever foldable iPhone.
In September we reported that Apple’s 20th anniversary iPhone will possibly use OLED display technology developed by Samsung called COE (Color Filter on Encapsulation). The technology provides a brighter and thinner display panel, using less power, while allowing more light through.
Apple Koren supplier LG Innotek is reportedly developing an under-display camera that leaves no visible hole when it is active. The new camera system’s “freeform optic” multiple lens array reduces image distortion and improves brightness.
