Earlier this week, Illinois joined the slowly-growing list of US states that allow their citizens to add their driver’s license of state ID to Apple Wallet app on the iPhone and Apple Watch.
While 13 states currently offer the feature, there are other states that have committed to offering the feature in the future. They are:
- Montana
- Connecticut
- Kentucky
- Mississippi
- Oklahoma
- Utah
Now, two more states have “signed on to adopt ID in Apple Wallet in the future,” according to their government websites:
Arkansas launched a mobile ID app in August. The app currently works with Google Wallet and Samsung Wallet, with Apple Wallet support coming later.
Meanwhile, Virginia launched a mobile ID app last week, and has announced it will “prepare for integration with digital wallets” in the “coming months.”
Apple added support for digital IDs back in 2022, but since the feature requires states to implement support, the rollout has been rather slow. In 2021, Apple said that it was in “discussions with many more states” and was optimistic that Wallet IDs would be available nationwide in the future.
Participating States
- Arizona
- Maryland
- Colorado
- Georgia
- Ohio
- Hawaii
- California
- Iowa
- New Mexico
- West Virginia
- Illinois
The feature is also available in Puerto Rico.
The feature will also work with Japan’s My Number Card in the future. 100 million plus Japanese residents currently have My Number Card IDs, allowing them to receive services at over 60,000 convenience stores around the country, through online portals, and in other settings such as hospitals and government agencies.
Participating Airports
Apple Wallet app IDs can be used at select TSA checkpoints within the following U.S. airports:
- Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI)
- Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA)
- Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX)
- Denver International Airport (DEN)
- Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL)
- Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky Airport (CVG)
- John Glenn Columbus International Airport (CMH)
- San Francisco International Airport (SFO)
- San Jose Mineta International Airport (SJC)
- Los Angeles International (LAX)
- Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL)
- Des Moines International Airport (DSM)
- Eastern Iowa Airport (CID)
- Albuquerque International Sunport (ABQ)
- Lea County Regional Airport (HOB)
- Luis Munoz Marin International Airport (SJU)
Apple tells travelers to refer to TSA checkpoint signage to confirm availability of the feature, and to visit the TSA’s website for more details.
Apple in September also announced that users will soon be able to present an Apple Wallet ID for CLEAR member enrollment at airports.
