Apple’s M4 chip is the most popular Apple Silicon chip among Mac gamers on Steam, according to recent data from parent company Valve.
19.60% of the Macs running Steam in December 2025 were powered by Apple’s M4 chip, which was released back in May 2024. The second most popular chip, with an 18.06% share, is the M1 chip from 2020, reports AppleInsider.
The M2 and M3 chips took the next two spots, with 13.08% and 7.31% shares of the Macs on Steam, respectively. This is despite the addition of support for hardware-accelerated ray tracing and other features on the M3.
The new M5 chip, which debuted in October 2025, was used by just over 1% of Mac gamers with Steam. It should be noted that the M5 is currently only available in the 14-inch MacBook Pro, while the M4 chip is used in a wide number of Macs, including the MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, Mac mini, and 24-inch iMac.
The M-Series chips on Steam gamers, are ranked from most popular to least, as follows:
- Apple M4 – 19.60%
- Apple M1 – 18.06%
- Apple M2 – 13.08%
- Apple M3 – 7.31%
- Apple M1 Pro – 6.89%
- Apple M4 Pro – 5.61%
- Apple M3 Pro – 3.64%
- Apple M2 Pro – 3.04%
- Apple M1 Max – 2.61%
- Apple M4 Max – 1.95%
- Apple M3 Max – 1.45%
- Apple M2 Max – 1.31%
- Apple M5 – 1.09%
The remaining 14.36% of Macs on Steam are Intel-powered machines.
The Ultra variant chips used in the Mac Pro and Mac Studio don’t make an appearance on the list. I would say that’s due to those computers targeting graphics and video professionals.
Most Mac gamers are running 16GB of RAM, while more than 25% of all Mac users on Steam are running the latest macOS operating system, Tahoe 26.
Other interesting stats about the Macs used on Steam include:
- Primary Display Resolution (OSX): 1440 x 900 (19.76%)
- Multi-Monitor Desktop Resolution (OSX): 3840 x 2160 (19.21%)
- Language (OSX): English (69.67%)
- Free Hard Drive Space (OSX): 10GB to 99GB (34.19%)
- Total Hard Drive Space (OSX): 100GB to 249GB (37.01%)
Despite efforts in recent years by Apple to make the Mac more popular among gamers and developers, the Mac continues to lag behind Windows PCs as a popular gaming platform. However, Mac users that have upgraded to at least an M4 have seen it prove itself as a worthwhile upgrade. It should be noted that an Apple Silicon version of the Steam app is now available.
