Apple at Mid-Point in Three-Year Plan to ‘Reinvent’ the iPhone

Apple is at the mid-point of a three-year plan to “reinvent” the look and feel of the iPhone, says Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman. Gurman says the iPhone roadmap he laid out has been a priority for Apple, led by hardware engineering chief John Ternus, who many consider to be the leading candidate to succeed Tim Cook as Apple’s CEO when Cook retires in the future.

Gurman this week said Apple’s three year plan is as follows:

  • September 2025: Redesigned iPhone 17 Pro models and an all-new iPhone Air (COMPLETE)
  • September 2026: A foldable iPhone
  • September 2027: A special 20th-anniversary iPhone

Apple’s iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max last September brought a new all-aluminum design, as well as a “plateau” that housed the rear camera system. It also added a rear Ceramic Shield glass area for MagSafe charging and accessories. Alongside the new Pro models, Apple also released the iPhone Air, which is the thinnest iPhone to date.

Now, in 2026, Apple is expected to unveil its much-anticipated foldable iPhone, likely in September.

The foldable iPhone will reportedly open up like a book, providing users with a larger screen, perfect for gaming, watching videos, and multitasking apps. iOS 27 is expected to include some foldable iPhone-only features, such as side-by-side apps and other iPad-like features.

The device is expected to sport a 5.5-inch outer display, with a iPad-style 4:3 aspect ratio virtually “crease-reduced” 7.8-inch display when unfolded. The device is said to have a 4.5mm titanium frame, Touch ID, and a starting price of approximately $2,000.

Other rumors have said the foldable iPhone will boast two rear cameras, one front shooter, and TOuch ID in the power button,

2027’s 20th-anniversary iPhone is said to have a seamless design, with a curved glass enclosure and no cutouts in the display. While this would require Apple to place the front camera under the screen, that may not come to fruition.

Apple is also reportedly shaking up the iPhone’s annual release schedule. Pushing its next entry-level model to spring 2027. Bloomberg claims the Cupertino company will also debut a new iPhone Air and a lower-budget iPhone 18e at that same time.
