It was a fantastic Christmas for Finnish developer Rovio, creators of Angry Birds. The company reports that they saw an astounding 6.5 million Angry Birds downloads on Christmas day alone.

The 6.5 million figure includes downloads of Angry Birds, Angry Birds Seasons and Angry Birds Rio across both Apple’s App Store and the Android Market, and sets a new all-time record for downloads of the popular apps.

Rovio spokesperson Ville Heijari stated the following to AllThingsD:

We’re really excited to have such a massive number of new people get acquainted with Angry Birds over the holidays — we have exciting new releases lined up for 2012, and can’t wait to introduce them to the public.

In contrast, Christmas day of 2010 saw around two million Angry Birds downloads, showing a strong upward trend in gifting of mobile devices, and usage of iOS and Android devices in general.

If you haven’t yet tried Angry Birds, now is your chance! Head on over to the App Store and grab a copy of your own for iPhone, iPod touch or iPad (App Store link).
