The iPad Keeps Apple at the Top of the Mobile PC Sales Charts

The mobile PC market is booming, and Apple remains the top dog on the sales charts. How are they doing it? A little device they like to call the iPad. Apple shipped 13.6 million iPads in the first quarter of 2012.

Apple shipped nearly 17.2 million mobile PCs in Q1’12, accounting for 118% Y/Y shipment growth, according to preliminary results from the latest NPD DisplaySearch Quarterly Mobile PC Shipment and Forecast Report.

NPD’s figures show that Apple’s 17.2 million mobile PCs shipped worldwide, were enough to capture a 22.5 percent share of the market — more than double that of its closest rival, Hewlett-Packard. In the same period, HP shipped only 8.9 million mobile PCs for an 11.6 percent market share.

Apple managed to dominate the mobile PC market with their iPad. Of the 17.2 million “mobile PCs” Apple shipped, 13.6 million were iPads. In the tablet segment of the market Apple is THE dominating force. During the 1st quarter, Apple claimed an amazing 62.8 percent share of the tablet market. Samsung, its next closest rival, shipped a paltry 1.6 million tablets during the quarter. It’s small share o f the market came to just 7.5 percent. Amazon followed in 3rd with 900,000 tablets shipped, with a 4 percent share. Research in Motion annd Asus rounded out the top 5 with 500,000 tablets each and a 2.3 percent market share.
