Apple released a new Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update this week, version 4.0.2, adding RAW image support for a variety of recent cameras, including the new Sony NEX-5R and Sony NEX-6, to their iPhoto and Aperture image editing software.

From Apple’s support document for the update:

Digital camera RAW formats retain more image information than JPEGs and can produce better results when used with imaging applications such as Aperture and iPhoto.

OS X Mountain Lion provides system-level support for digital camera RAW formats from the following cameras. Note: To install Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Updates, you may need certain versions of Aperture or iPhoto already installed on your Mac.

Supported by Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 4.02*

Nikon COOLPIX P7700
Olympus PEN E-PL5
Olympus PEN E-PM2
Olympus STYLUS XZ-2
Panasonic LUMIX DMC-GH3
Sony Alpha NEX-5R
Sony Alpha NEX-6
Sony Alpha SLT-A99

Digital Camera Raw Compatibility Update 4.02 weighs in at just 5.06MB, and is available immediately through Software Update for users of iPhoto ’11 and Aperture 3, as well as for direct download from Apple’s support site.
