T-Mobile to Enable LTE on Unlocked iPhones Starting April 5th

Friday should be a little brighter day for T-Mobile customers that brought their iPhones over to the carrier, as they should see some feature enhancements and maybe even a data speed jump when the magenta network rolls out an update on Friday.

TmoNews:

“The T-Mobile Carrier Update is a minor iOS software update that enables official iPhone support by T-Mobile. When installed, the software update enables a handful of capabilities like Visual Voicemail, MMS Settings and Network/Device optimizations that customers do not have access to today. On April 5, the software update will begin being pushed via OTA to all iPhone devices on the T-Mobile network with iOS 6.1.x or higher.”

While still unconfirmed, it’s possible that these “optimizations” will allow the unlocked devices to access the network’s LTE network. Data speed for iPhones on T-Mobile’s network are currently limited to 2G EDGE speeds.

The iPhone 5 will be making its official debut on the T-Mobile network on April 12. The OTA update for current T-Mobile iPhone users will go out to those devices running iOS 6.1 or higher beginning April 5.

Update: Aside from TmoNews’ confirmation, we’ve received independent confirmation from a T-Mobile representative that the update will indeed be released on April 5th.
