Apple on Thursday told Apple TV developers the app size limit in the tvOS App Store has been increased to 4 GB. The limit was originally 200 MB, forcing developers to provide some game assets “on-demand” downloading them as the app required them.

The size limit of a tvOS app bundle has increased from 200 MB to 4 GB, so you can include more media in your submission and provide a complete, rich user experience upon installation. Also, tvOS apps can use On-Demand Resources to host up to 20 GB of additional content on the App Store.

In the wake of the allowance increase, developers will be able to include additional game or app assets with the initial download, which should provide users with an improved, richer experience upon the app’s installation.

tvOS apps are still allowed to use on-demand resources of up to 20 GB of additional content, which are downloaded on the fly as needed to the user’s Apple TV available storage, which is then erased when no longer needed. This allows resources such as tutorials, and new game levels to be supplied as needed.

Apple Initially Feared Apple TV Storage Issues

When the fourth-generation Apple TV was first launched, developers were limited to a 200MB initial download size for their apps, due to Apple’s fears users might easily run out of space on the 32 GB and 64 GB storage options the Apple TV lineup is available with.
