Apple Patents Non-Exploding Batteries. That’s Nice!

What’s more awesome than exploding batteries? How about the complete opposite? Non-exploding batteries. Apple has patented a technology to be used in batteries that prevent them from exploding.

Sometimes when a battery is exposed to direct sunlight or heat, gas buildup can result in the battery swelling, and on occasion exploding!

From Patently Apple:

Apple’s patent application outlines a battery cell which includes a weakness for relieving pressure. This battery cell may include a jelly roll comprising layers which are wound together, including a cathode with an active coating, a separator, and an anode with an active coating. The jelly roll may also include a first conductive tab coupled to the cathode and a second conductive tab coupled to the anode.

That’s a nice move from Apple. I can’t imagine what it would be like to have a $1,500 Macbook burst into flames and explode.
