iOS 5 May Enable FaceTime Over 3G

Those of you that enjoy FaceTime, but are not conveniently glued to a Wi-Fi hotspot at all times, may soon have reason to rejoice! According to 9to5Mac, FaceTime may soon begin working over 3G as well as Wi-Fi.

The report is derived from a screenshot (above) submitted to our source asking the user to either turn on Wi-Fi or cellular data to use FaceTime. Previously, that warning message only requested that you turn on Wi-Fi. and only showed up when you weren’t connected to a Wi-Fi network.

It’s likely that the technology will only work over 3G, and not edge, due to Edge’s slower speeds. Before you get too excited, do keep in mind that this is still all speculative, and nobody has any strong positive evidence for this change, but today’s rumor does give room for hope.

The question that remains is: Will this work for both US wireless carriers (AT&T and Verizon), or will we see one or both of them back out? Sound off with your thoughts in the comments.
