Apple Forms Agreement With TSMC For Future A6, A7 Processor Production

Digitimes reports that Apple has finalized an agreement with Taiwan Semiconductor Group (TSMC) establishing TSMC as the producer of Apple’s next two generations of custom processor (A6 and A7, presumably).

The new processors will use new 28nm and 20nm process technologies, which will result in smaller chip that are more power efficient that Apple’s current A5 processor.

Neither the A6 nor its successor have been officially announced by Apple, of course, but sources within Apple’s component suppliers suggests that Apple’s A6 processor will power Apple’s 6th-generation iPhone and third-generation iPad when they are released sometime next year.

TSMC was rumored to have begun trial production of Apple’s A6 processor in July in order for Apple to see whether they could produce the processors fast enough to satisfy Apple’s demand expectation.
