(Update: FALSE) Apple Quietly Updates MacBook Pros With Bluetooth 4.0 Support

Apple has recently begun implement support for a new Bluetooth specification called Bluetooth 4.0. Apple has so far added support to the new MacBook Airs & Mac Mini and the iPhone 4S. It also appears, however, that Apple has been quietly adding Bluetooth 4.0 support to the MacBook Pro as well.

Although Apples specs page for the MacBook Pro still only lists support for Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR, I recently discovered something very interesting while testing option key functions on my MacBook Pro. While holding down the option key and clicking on the Bluetooth icon in my menu bar, I was presented with the above image.

My Bluetooth version was reported as 4.0.1f4 in the drop down menu, which seems to indicate that this MacBook Pro contains support for the latest Bluetooth 4.0 specification. Launching Bluetooth Explorer and looking up the Bluetooth controller information for my Mac confirmed this result:

The MacBook Pro that I discovered this on was purchased the day after OS X Lion was released (July 21, 2011), and came pre-loaded with OS X Lion. This suggests to me that Apple has been quietly updating all of their newly manufactured logic boards to support the new Bluetooth 4.0 standard.

Update: This post ended up being completely false, as pointed out by many commenters. Our apologies for the inconvenience.
