Android Device Activations Reach 700,000 Daily

Android chief and Google vice president Andy Rubin announced via his Twitter account that Android devices have now reached a record 700,000 daily activations. This is pretty impressive, it has to be said. The daily activation rate is growing by 4.4% each week, according to figures published in June.

Rubin later went into more detail on his Google+ account:

“For those wondering, we count each device only once (ie, we don’t count re-sold devices), and “activations” means you go into a store, buy a device, put it on the network by subscribing to a wireless service.”

Android has been growing steadily over the past year, with recent figures showing that Android-based phones are the dominant force in the market with a 53% share. The iPhone is on 29%. However having said that, bear in mind that while there are only three tiers of iPhone out there against hundreds of Android phones. Per individual phone, Apple is therefore still ahead.
