Munster: Apple Television Coming This Year, Will be the Biggest Thing Since the Smartphone

Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster has had plenty to say about Apple’s possible upcoming connected television, and has now stated in an interview with Bloomberg Radio (via 9to5Mac) that not only is the Apple TV coming, but that it will make a pretty enormous dent in the consumer electronics industry.

It’s going to live up to some of the building hype. It will be the biggest thing in consumer electronics since the smartphone.

Munster claims that Apple’s “big picture” is all about their upcoming television. If true, that could mean that Apple’s current product development, such as their work on the iPad 3, upcoming Macs and releases of OS X, and more, could all be paving the way for Apple’s television to disrupt the TV industry in a huge way.

Munster claims that Apple’s HDTV will be released this year, and could be available for purchase by this fall. He also claims the device will look different from what we currently expect televisions to look like: “Imagine just a sheet of glass – no edges or bevels”.

If Apple releases a new version of the Apple TV set top box next month as many expect (considering that the devices are out of stock at most major retailers), it may pave the way for Apple to begin introducing new HD content through iTunes – content which could also be used on the rumored Retina display of the iPad 3.
