Facebook Messenger to Gain iPad Support and Video Chat

Facebook has long focused on smartphones over tablets, with Facebook for iPad arriving much, much later than its iPhone counterpart. According to a new report from 9to5Mac, the same is true of Facebook’s recently released Messenger app.

The site has managed to get their hands on a supposed early beta of the next version of Facebook Messenger for iOS. The beta features iPad support, as well as video chat capabilities for the iPhone and iPod touch – a feature which Facebook added to their web interface last July.

Unfortunately, the iPad app doesn’t seem to be all that impressive, as 9to5Mac describes it as “basically a larger version of the iPhone application” rather than an interface completely redesigned for the iPad. The good news, however, is that the video chat is reportedly quite smooth!

The app is reportedly still being tested internally by Facebook. No solid information has been provided about the release date, although the app is apparently in very active development. The site also notes that the updated app is likely to be released ahead of Facebook’s forthcoming Android app.

What are your thoughts? Are you excited for an iPad version of Facebook Messenger? Do you even use Facebook Messenger? Is Facebook late to the iPad party yet again? Sound off in the comments!
