Google Outranks Apple as Top Publisher in the App Store

If someone asked who the #1 publisher of non-game apps was on Apple’s App Store, most people would probably guess it was Apple – but as the latest data from App Annie reveals, those people would be dead wrong. According to the report, Google Maps and YouTube are the two most downloaded non-game apps in the App Store in February, leaving Apple’s collection of productivity and other apps in the dust.

While Google currently takes the top two spots, however, Apple did actually dominate the App Store rankings last month, revealing that the actual download numbers for each app are anything but consistent over time. Further, Google’s role as top publisher is only due to the actual raw number of downloads – when it comes to revenue, Apple still takes the cake.

Interestingly, in the same way that Google is dominating Apple’s App Store rankings, Facebook has taken the number one slot in the Google Play store – not Google Maps, or any of Google’s other apps for their own platform. It’s a pretty interesting revelation, to be sure – and one that I’m sure neither Apple nor Google is ultimately all that pleased with.

These are only a few of the nuggets revealed in App Annie’s latest data, however – head on over to App Annie to check out the full report! Thanks to App Annie for sending us the link!
