Kickstarter of the Week: SOSCharger – The Self-Powered Smartphone Charger

Pop quiz, hotshot. There’s been an earthquake, a hurricane is on the way, and you’re expecting a phone call telling you that you’ve been hired as CEO of Apple, and your iPhone is showing a 5% charge left. What do you do? What do you do?

Well, if you have this week’s Kickstarter of the Week, the SOSCharger, you simply pop it out of it’s handy case, hook your device up to it and BAM! Instant power! But what if you’ve been careless enough to let the charge of the SOSCharge run down? No worries pilgrim, simply start turning the handle to generate your own hand-cranked powered charger.

From the SOSCharger Kickstarter page:

An issue with some hand-crank products on the market is they lack power output for modern smartphones, especially the iPhone. Many current solar solutions also don’t collect enough light to work effectively and light is not always available in an emergency. We have a lot of experience with this technology. Our engineers developed a solution that is compatible with every brand of mobile phone and other products utilizing the USB-standard power source.

The solution? We incorporated a 1,500 mAh Lithium Polymer battery inside the device.

The SOSCharger has a powerful built-in generator. Turning the handle for 3-5 minutes will give you 5-12 minutes of talk time.

In addition to the hand-cranked charger, you can also charge the unit with the USB wall charger you got with your device. Once it’s charged up, you can use it and the cable you got with your device to keep your phone charged. The SOSCharger works with all modern smartphones, including the iPhone, iPod, BlackBerry, Android devices, etc.

The SOSCharger is about the size of an iPod Classic, so it will easily fit into your pants pocket.

Kickstarter supporters will receive a 2-year exchange guarantee on the SOSCharger for any factory defect.
