Pioneer Debuts First CarPlay-Compatible In-Dash Systems

Pioneer has become the first company to officially offer Apple CarPlay vehicle integration, announcing the addition of CarPlay support to five of its 2014 model NEX in-dash infotainment receivers.

Pioneer, via MacRumors:

“CarPlay enriches the iPhone experience in the vehicle by providing a safer way to access the iPhone features they want to use most while driving,” said Ted Cardenas, vice president of marketing for the Car Electronics Division of Pioneer Electronics (USA) Inc. “With Pioneer’s implementation, CarPlay can now be integrated into millions of vehicles already on the road.”

The enhancement is available through a firmware update for the $1400AVIC–8000NEX, the $1200 AVIC–7000NEX, the $900 AVIC–6000NEX, the $750 AVIC–5000NEX and the $700 AVH–4000NEX. CarPlay is also compatible with Pioneer’s new $600 smartphone receiver, AppRadio 4.

CarPlay can be enabled in compatible Pioneer NEX in-dash systems via a firmware update, available at no cost. CarPlay requires an iPhone 5 or later handset, running iOS 7.1 or later.

Apple introduced CarPlay back in March. The system offers hands-free operation of an iPhone, via the dashboard display of a vehicle’s infotainment console. Drivers can complete tasks such as making phone calls, sending messages, or getting directions via Siri, Apple’s virtual personal assistant.

Pioneer competitors Alpine and Clarion are also expected to offer support for CarPlay in the near future. Apple is also partnering with a wide range of automotive manufacturers to offer the system as an option in vehicles. Companies participating in the program include Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, BMW, Ford, Hyundai, GM, Honda, Mazda, Audi, and others.
