An alleged iPad mini 2 prototype is up for suction on eBay. The device – a cellular model – carries a starting bid of $4,999. A the time of this article, no bids had been made for the device.
The reason bids go for so much on these prototypes is that security experts, hackers and jailbreakers like to understand the software that’s loaded on them to get a better idea of what’s going on behind the scenes on iOS devices.
The seller cites the device’s running Apple’s Switchboard software, and the lack of a serial number and FCC markings as evidence that the device is genuine.
The seller – who, while having a 95.8% feedback rating, has previous only sold low-cost items – has provided no information on how the device was acquired.
