Analyst Gene Munster Finally Gives Up on an Apple Television

Piper Jaffray analyst Gene (no relation to Herman) Munster has finally given up on what seems like a life-long dream of seeing a full-blown television set released by Apple.

Analyst Gene Munster, he of the dashed Apple TV hopes…

9to5Mac:

Faced with the WSJ‘s report that Apple had considered launching its own TV set but had dropped its plans a full year ago, Munster has issued a note entitled Facing The Reality of No Apple Television, reports Business Insider.

“Given how adamant we have been about the reality of an Apple television, it’s hard to accept the reality of no Apple television,” says Munster in his note. “Our latest thinking prior to this story was that Apple would launch a television in 2016. Based on this report, we no longer expect a television to launch indefinitely.”

Munster has been predicting the release of a television set from Apple since early 2011, with semi-annual repeat predictions since then. Sadly, he faced disappointment at every turn.

Munster did man up, taking ownership of his incorrect predictions by saying: “Originally we had expected that content was the reason for the delay; however, we misidentified the true reason for delay, which was a lack of perceived killer features as reported by the WSJ. We incorrectly assumed that a combination of Siri, FaceTime, a TV app store, and PrimeSense based motion control could be compelling enough as a unique feature set for the device.” (OK, so he used the royal “we.”)

While a full-blown Apple television set is not in the cards, Apple is expected to debut a revamped Apple TV set-top streaming box at WWDC 2015, starting June 8. The new box is expected to boast a faster processor, larger on-board storage, Siri capabilities, and an App Store.
