Twitter Lifts 140 Character Limit from Direct Messages

Have too much to say in a 140 character direct message in Twitter? Then rejoice, oh verbose one, for Twitter has officially lifted the 140 character burden from your back!

Twitter on Wednesday announced it is removing the 140 character restriction on the length of private direct messages. This will allow users to chat, unrestricted by character length, like most other modern chat and messaging apps.

Twitter announced back in June that they would be removing the 140 character limit from Direct Messages, but today marks the rollout of the new feature to users, and it will become available to all users over the next few weeks. (So don’t get too upset if you try to send a 141 character message and can’t do it. It’s on the way.)

The limit has been removed on all platforms, so no matter if you use the Twitter web interface, the apps for iOS and Android, or the apps for Mac, you’ll be able to type until your fingers fall off. (Man… I hate when that happens!) You will want to be sure you’ve upgraded to the latest version of the official Twitter apps.

The company has no plans to remove the character limit from public tweets, so you’ll still need to show some restraint and creativity when communicating with the public in general.
