Sony Spoofs Apple’s “Hey Siri” Invite on PlayStation’s 20th Birthday

Sony is looking to grab a little bit of the Apple event spotlight today, as the electronics firm posted an image on their Xperia Twitter account spoofing Apple’s press event. Could they also be indicating they’re just a bit worried that the upcoming Apple TV may prove to be a popular gaming platform?

AppleInsider:

“Hey Sony, give us a hint,” the image read, with Apple’s Siri-themed event graphic in the background. Below that text was binary code, translating into the words “Game on.”

While the main unveil today will be of Apple’s new iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus handsets, the company is also expected to debut a next-generation Apple TV. The new set top box is expected to boast improved specs such as a new processor, more internal storage, Siri support, and more.

The new box is also expected to boast a touchpad remote, with possible gaming features, such as motion-control and gaming buttons, plus a new App Store, which will contain all sorts of apps, including games. A new Apple TV with these features could put a bit of a dent into Sony’s PlayStation sales.

Sony’s little dig at Apple comes on the 20th anniversary of the launch of the original PlayStation in North America. The Japanese electronics firm and its fans have been celebrating on Twitter using the #20YearsOfPlay hashtag.

Big things are coming later today folks, as Apple is expected to debut their new iPhones later today, and alongside those, we also expect to see a fourth-generation Apple TV, the debut of iOS 9, and likely a new 12.9-inch iPad Pro and accompanying accessories, and an iPad mini 4, as well as new Apple Watch bands, and possibly new finishes for the Apple Watch.

The big event begins at 1PM Eastern/10AM Pacific, and Apple will provide a livestream of the event, which will be available to users of iOS devices, Macs, Apple TVs, and PCs. For those of you who can’t access the livestream, join us here at MacTrast, where we’ll be liveblogging the event, and reporting on all of the announcements following the event.
