Will Your Mac Work With macOS Sierra? Here’s the List of Compatible Macs

Just as our post earlier today broke the news to owners of some older iOS devices that they won’t be able to update to iOS 10, now comes our sad duty to inform owners of some older Macs that their beloved machine may not make the cut for macOS Sierra when it is released this fall.

During yesterday’s onstage preview of macOS Sierra, Apple’s SVP of Software Engineering, Craig Federighi showed the slide above, listing the hardware requirements for the company’s latest and greatest version of the Mac operating system.

The Macs listed below are compatible with the new OS, anything made before those will not be able to make the leap to the next level.

2009 and Later

  • MacBook
  • iMac

2010 and Later

  • MacBook Air
  • MacBook Pro
  • Mac mini
  • Mac Pro

Supporting machines that are six or more years old is still a pretty god feat, although that probably gives little solace to Mac users who will be forced to stay on an older version of OS X, or buy a new Mac. (And how will you peel all of those stickers off of your MacBook?)

macOS will offer a number of new features to Mac users, including Siri, a new file system, enhanced Continuity features with copy & paste across all devices, enhanced messaging, Photo app improvements, auto-unlocking your Mac via your Apple Watch, Apple Pay for the web browser, and more.

The developers preview of macOS Sierra is available today at the Apple Developer Portal. A public beta is due in July, and the public will get the new OS in the fall.
