Report: Bob Mansfield to Take Prominent ‘Project Titan’ Role Following Shakeup

The Wall Street Journal reported on Monday that Apple hardware engineer and former executive Bob Mansfield is returning to a prominent role in the company, taking charge of the Cupertino firm’s “Project Titan” vehicle project.

AppleInsider:

Citing unnamed sources, The Wall Street Journal reported on Monday that former senior vice president has assumed control of “Project Titan,” the alleged code name for Apple’s autonomous vehicle efforts. The move comes months after it was revealed that company veteran Steve Zadesky, the former head of the “Apple Car” project, was leaving Apple.

Mansfield had announced in June 2012 that he would be retiring from the company, but, Much like Michael Corleone, just when he thought he was out, the Apple family pulled him back in, as a month later saw the announcement that Mansfield would be staying in an advisory role to company CEO (Godfather) Tim Cook.

Mansfield then served as Senior Vice President of Technologies, but left that role in July of 2013, continuing to work on “special projects,” reporting to Cook.

Word that Mansfield has taken the reigns of Apple’s “Project Titan” vehicle effort comes only days following a report that the product’s launch had been delayed until 2021. Earlier rumors has the launch “set” for a 2020 debut.
