Apple’s iPhone 6s & iPhone 6 Named Top-Selling Smartphones in Q2 2016

According to the latest research from Strategy Analytics, Apple’s iPhone 6s and iPhone 6 were the top selling smartphones worldwide in the 2nd quarter of 2016.

The iPhone 6s was the top-selling smartphone internationally in Q2 2016, with an estimated 14.2 million shipments. The two-year-old iPhone 6 continued to sell well, with an estimated 8.5 million shipments during the same time period.

Samsung’s more recent handset – the Galaxy S7 Edge, which was released in March 2016 – was only able to muster enough shipments to rank third in the study, with an estimated 8.3 million shipments in the second quarter.

Apple officially reported iPhone sales of 40.4 million in the second quarter, which includes all of the models of the handset that they currently offer.

MacRumors notes the iPhone 7 models, due to debut tomorrow at an Apple media event, could lead to Apple’s staying on top as the top-selling smartphone through the all-important holiday season, due to Samsung’s recall of their new Galaxy Note 7, following reports of exploding batteries. Some analysts predict the recall could cost Samsung somewhere between $1 billion and $5 billion in lost revenue.
